Coconut oil can be a healthy supplement for your dogs health if added to their food in moderation. Because the oil generally contains about 90% saturated fats, most of which are MCT's, generally considered "healthy fats", adding just a tablespoon to your dogs food once or twice a week can be optimal. The MCT's in coconut oil can help reduce skin irritations due to it's anti-inflammatory properties, and also have antifungal, antimicrobial and antiviral properties as well!
Due to the fact that MCT's in coconut oil metabolize quickly, it can provide an immediate source of energy for your pup, and some research even indicates that coconut oil can be helpful in aiding digestion, improving brain activity and mental function, and can even assist with weight loss. As stated above, however, the high concentration of fats means that too much cocnut oil can add to an upset stomach, and possibly weight gain, which is why we suggest using in moderation, possibly 1-2 times per week, and should not be used as a daily addition to your dog's diet. As with any new product, always start with a small amount to be safe.
We will always recommend using organic ingredients over anything processed when it comes to feeding our dogs, and so finding an organic, virgin cold pressed coconut oil would be best. Consider this product for a natural source of healthy fats to add to your pups diet!
