Medical - Corn Starch To Help Stop Bleeding From Minor Cuts

Corn starch is a commonly found household item that can be used in a pinch to help stop bleeding from minor cuts or abrasions. Sometimes our dogs can cut their paws on a rough surface outside, step on something sharp, or you may have trimmed their nail just too short and caused the nail to bleed.

In these situations, using corn starch on the cut can aid in clotting and preventing further bleeding by absorbing the moisture and helping seal the wound. Applying the corn starch to the wound and keeping pressure using a paper towel or cloth should help stop the bleeding in short time. Please know that this is for minor cuts and abrasions only, and in cases of heavy bleeding or larger open wounds, or if the bleeding persists, corn starch is not a substitute for professional vet care. In these cases, apply pressure to the wound to with a cloth or towel until a vet can give proper assistance and wound care, and can make sure that the bleeding stops and the wound is properly disinfected. If a cut is large and you are unsure as to how to deal with the open wound, please contact your vet immediately
