GARDEN GROVE, Calif. (KCAL/KCBS) - Dogs can get into all kinds of predicaments, such as one pup who found herself stuck in a very tight crawl space inside a home.
Her family is extremely grateful to the firefighters who rescued her.
A pair of firefighters with sledgehammers were on a mission in a home’s bathroom in Garden Grove, California.
The firefighters, with the Orange County Fire Authority, were called Sunday to rescue 2-year-old Faye, who was stuck in a tight space inside the walls of her owners’ home.
“At first I thought she could still, I thought there was space for her to move,” Julian Nguyen, Faye’s owner, said. “So, I was getting my hand kneeling down and trying to reach my arm all the way through to pull her back but she was way too far inside.”
Nguyen said he then tried to entice Faye out with some chicken on a fork, thinking the dog would be able to turn around and get to it.
When she wouldn’t budge for the chicken, he knew something was wrong.
Faye had climbed into an access door about six months ago, but the family said they never dreamed she’d be able to get into the other because it is narrow and it’s chock full of plumbing equipment. But somehow, Faye managed to do it.
“We knew she was somewhere in between this corner here,” firefighter Hector Jimenez said. “And we could also hear her as well.”
Jimenez said they also spotted Faye with a thermal imaging camera. Once they saw her, they had to decide between two options to get her out.
“We were going to go through the drywall was our number one option,” Jimenez said. “But we could either use a sledgehammer or a Sawzall to get access.
The Nguyens told firefighters they’d tried for two hours but had no luck coaxing the frightened dog out of the hole.
Once the drywall was removed Faye, who was already injured after being hit by a car a few weeks ago, was able to climb out.
“They went beyond you know duties and everything to get really,” Dat Nguyen, Faye’s other owner, said. “First of all to get Faye out safely”
Jimenez said that is the beauty of his job.
“That’s the beauty of this job is every day’s something different,” he said. “And we come together as a team to come up with a plan and get the job done.
